Elon Musk’s AI venture, xAI, has introduced an API for its flagship model, Grok 3, enabling developers to integrate its capabilities into various applications. Grok 3, unveiled in February 2025, offers functionalities such as image analysis and question answering, and is integrated with Musk’s social network, X.
The API provides two versions of the model: Grok 3 and Grok 3 Mini, both equipped with reasoning capabilities. Pricing for Grok 3 is set at $3 per million input tokens (approximately 750,000 words) and $15 per million output tokens. Grok 3 Mini is available at $0.30 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens. For applications requiring faster responses, premium tiers are offered at higher rates.
In comparison to competitors, Grok 3’s pricing aligns with Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 Sonnet but is higher than Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro, which has demonstrated superior performance in certain AI benchmarks. Additionally, the Grok 3 API supports a context window of up to 131,072 tokens (around 97,500 words), which is less than the previously claimed 1 million tokens.
Initially promoted as an unfiltered and politically neutral AI, earlier versions of Grok faced criticism for exhibiting biases on topics like transgender rights and diversity programs. Musk has acknowledged these concerns and committed to adjusting the model to achieve greater neutrality.
The release of the Grok 3 API represents xAI’s effort to compete in the AI sector by offering developers access to its advanced language model, aiming to foster innovation across various applications.
