AI Now Writes Up to 30% of Microsoft’s Code

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed that artificial intelligence now contributes between 20% and 30% of the code in the company’s repositories. This announcement was made during a fireside chat with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg at Meta’s LlamaCon developer conference.

Nadella noted that the effectiveness of AI-generated code varies across programming languages, with significant progress in Python and less in C++. This reflects the broader industry trend of integrating AI tools, such as GitHub Copilot, to assist developers in writing code more efficiently.

Looking ahead, Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott has projected that by 2030, AI could be responsible for generating up to 95% of all code. This ambitious forecast underscores the company’s commitment to embedding AI deeper into its software development processes.

In the same discussion, when Nadella inquired about Meta’s use of AI in code generation, Zuckerberg admitted uncertainty regarding the extent of AI-generated code within his company. This exchange highlights the varying degrees of AI integration across major tech firms.

Comparatively, Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently stated that over 30% of Google’s code is now AI-generated. However, the methodologies for calculating these figures remain unclear, suggesting that such percentages should be interpreted cautiously.

As AI continues to reshape the software development landscape, Microsoft’s increasing reliance on AI-generated code positions it at the forefront of this technological evolution. The company’s strategic investments in AI tools and platforms are set to redefine coding practices and developer workflows in the years to come.
