Google DeepMind has unveiled Genie 4, a new artificial intelligence model capable of generating interactive virtual environments with realistic movement, synchronised sound and changing physical conditions. Announced on 27 October, the technology represents another development in AI systems designed to simulate environments rather than simply produce static images or conventional video sequences.

Genie 4 allows users to influence simulated scenes through natural-language instructions, including changing weather conditions, introducing characters or altering camera movement. The system generates corresponding environmental sounds, dialogue and music as the simulated world changes. It builds on technologies from Google's Gemini model family, combining visual understanding with reasoning capabilities intended to preserve consistency as events develop.

DeepMind sees world simulation as an important research direction for artificial intelligence.

Interactive environments could eventually provide training spaces for robots and autonomous software agents, allowing developers to study how systems respond to changing conditions without exposing equipment or people to physical risks. The technology may also support new approaches to gaming, filmmaking and digital content production, although those potential applications remain dependent on further development.

For now, Genie 4 is being introduced through a limited research preview involving selected testers. Google plans to extend access to AI Ultra subscribers through Project Genie and to early development partners using its AI platforms. The announcement demonstrates growing competition to develop models capable of understanding and simulating how environments behave. Such systems could eventually broaden AI's applications beyond generating information towards supporting decisions and actions in complex settings.
