In an ambitious forecast, Nintendo has projected sales of 15 million units for its upcoming Switch 2 console during the fiscal year ending March 2026. Although this estimate is lower than the company’s initial target of 20 million, it still places the Switch 2 on track to become one of the fastest-selling consoles in history. In addition to the console sales, Nintendo expects to sell 45 million Switch 2 games and an additional 4.5 million units of the original Switch.
The cautious forecast is attributed to ongoing uncertainties surrounding U.S. trade tariffs and challenges in meeting initial demand. Despite these hurdles, Nintendo remains optimistic about the Switch 2’s potential. The company originally planned to launch between 6 and 8 million units but has acknowledged that demand will likely exceed supply. For comparison, the original Nintendo Switch sold nearly 15 million units in its first year, while the PlayStation 5 sold just over 13 million during its first 10 months. These figures highlight the strong demand expected for the Switch 2.
Scheduled for release on June 5, 2025, the Switch 2 promises significant improvements over its predecessor, including a larger screen and enhanced graphics. Nintendo is also expanding its brand beyond gaming, with new films based on the “Super Mario” and “The Legend of Zelda” franchises. These ventures, combined with the console’s success, are expected to boost Nintendo’s revenue by 63%, with a projected ¥1.9 trillion ($13 billion) for the fiscal year ending March 2026.
Looking ahead, Nintendo’s ability to navigate external challenges such as trade tariffs and meet the high demand for the Switch 2 will be crucial for its success. If the company can capitalize on the growing interest in gaming and deliver on its promises, the Switch 2 could redefine its position in the global tech market and help drive substantial growth for Nintendo.
