SpaceX’s ambition to challenge established American mobile operators has gained an important equipment partner. Qualcomm has signed a multiyear agreement to supply technology for a planned terrestrial 5G network under the Starlink Mobile brand.

The arrangement covers radio equipment, baseband units and software, with deployment expected across tens of thousands of US cell sites beginning in 2027. Financial terms were not disclosed, although Qualcomm described the agreement as its largest 5G deal.

For Qualcomm, best known for smartphone processors, the contract extends its presence in telecommunications infrastructure. For SpaceX, the planned terrestrial network would complement its satellite operations, but building a competitive national service requires substantial investment and complex execution.

The agreement is evidence of a commercial partnership, not proof that the network has already been constructed. It nevertheless signals a potential shift in mobile competition, where satellite connectivity and conventional cell networks could increasingly be planned as parts of the same service.
