Samsung Electronics has reported an extraordinary increase in quarterly earnings as global demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure continues to transform the semiconductor industry. The South Korean technology giant announced on 29 October that operating profit reached a record 107.4 trillion won ($80 billion) during the third quarter, almost nine times the 12.2 trillion won recorded a year earlier.

Consolidated revenue climbed to 195.3 trillion won, a 14% increase from the preceding quarter. Samsung's semiconductor division accounted for the overwhelming majority of earnings, generating 106.5 trillion won in operating profit on revenue of 147.1 trillion won. Demand for advanced memory chips used in AI servers supported higher prices and stronger sales, particularly for high-bandwidth memory, server DRAM and enterprise solid-state drives.

Samsung said it had significantly increased sales of its latest HBM4 memory products as technology companies expanded their computing infrastructure. The company expects AI-related capital expenditure to reach unprecedented levels in 2027, with memory demand likely to exceed available industry supply. Its consumer electronics division, however, recorded an operating loss of 0.8 trillion won despite quarterly revenue growth.

The results demonstrate how rapidly AI investment is reshaping the semiconductor industry's earnings. Samsung and domestic rival SK Hynix are benefiting from demand for specialised memory that enables advanced processors to handle increasingly complex workloads. Yet the scale of current profits also raises questions about how long the expansion can continue. Investors will be watching whether sustained AI infrastructure spending can support the industry's increasingly ambitious production and investment plans.
